Maintaining a Wix website: what needs doing and what does it cost?

Wix handles hosting and security, but forms, content, mobile display and SEO remain your job. What to check, one-off help versus a package, and how costs are built up.

A Wix website runs on the Wix platform, so Wix takes much of the technical maintenance off your hands. Some work remains that only you or a specialist can do. This article explains what Wix handles, what you need to keep an eye on and how maintenance costs are built up.

What Wix maintains

Wix manages the technology underneath your website. You don't need to worry about:

  • hosting, servers and platform availability;
  • security updates and the SSL certificate;
  • updates to the editor and standard features;
  • site history, which lets you restore an earlier version.

What the owner or a specialist does

Everything related to the content, settings and behaviour of your site remains your responsibility. These are the areas where things go wrong in practice:

  • Forms: do enquiries still arrive, and at the right email address?
  • Content: are prices, opening hours, team members and contact details still correct?
  • Mobile display: after a change, a page can look different on a phone than on desktop.
  • SEO: titles, descriptions, redirects after changed URLs and the link with Google Search Console.
  • Speed: large images, videos and extra apps slow pages down.
  • Apps and integrations: external apps and custom Velo code can behave differently after a change.

Preventing issues: a regular check

Most problems can be prevented with a short, regular check. Test your forms, view your key pages on your phone, check Search Console for reported errors and review your contact details. Ideally do this monthly and after every larger change.

One-off work or a maintenance package?

There are two ways to arrange maintenance:

  • One-off work: you call in help when something needs doing, such as an issue or a new page. You pay per job.
  • A package: you agree in advance that someone looks after your site and gives your questions priority. You pay a fixed amount.

A package fits when your website is an important source of enquiries or revenue, or when you regularly need changes. For a site that rarely changes, one-off help is often enough.

How costs are built up

Maintenance costs consist of three parts: your Wix subscription (paid to Wix), any paid apps and the work of a specialist. At FLOR-IT, yearly support costs € 360 per year excl. VAT, covering updates and priority support. One-off jobs and larger changes are quoted in advance, so you know the cost before work starts. Read more on our Wix website support and maintenance page.
